Well this was a good day. In the morning I just did stuff around the house, like downloading photos and stuff.
I set off for Exeter about 12.30, and got there something like 14.30. There are long term roadworks between J26 and J28 by the way. They are resurfacing the old bit, and as a result there is only one side of the motorway in action, and no hard shoulder.
I parked in a place I thought was free parking, but I forgot to check how long I had. When I returned 40 minutes later to check, I found it was a pay and display. But I was pleased to see I had got away with it, and hastily bought a ticket.
I met Gaz wandering along the road with a slightly depressed look on his face, but he said he wasn't feeling too good, which would have explained it. We went to Woolworths and Argos. He bought some stuff for his new bathroom in Argos. He's starting work there (Argos) on Monday.
We drove back to his old place and went in. The door didn't open properly. He had so much stuff in that room it was unbelievable. Everything from rusty pans to fire engines. Not to mention 3 carrier bags full of newspapers, and the essential 10 litres of Tesco lemonade. We pretty much filled the boot of the Cavalier with the seats folded and drove off to meet his landlady at his new flat at 6.00. There was lots of traffic, but we were ok, she was running late too. There was nowhere to park so I had to park round the corner on some double yellows. Gaz went in to hand over the cash, and chat to her about the sorts of thing you chat about, while I was approached by the local 14 year old gang of girls wondering if I could get them some alcohol. They did say excuse me though, so I excused them.
Anyway, Gaz took the stuff up while I made sure the swarm of drunks and children dressed as teenagers didn't nick his computer and the car. It took quite a while, but that was because there was so much stuff in the back.
Once that was done, we went back to James Owen Court and picked up the rest of his stuff, and then dropped that off. During the journey there was a siren sound close by. Turned out it was Gaz's fire engine in the passenger seat.
Headed to Curry's to pick up his fridge-freezer. He told me as we arrived he'd gone for a bigger one than planned, so we had to check it would fit in the Cavalier. So, adopting a rudimentary arm and hand measuring system I deduced that it should fit in, if we were lucky (and we weren't worried about the tailgate shutting). We got the guy to wheel it out, and he looked a bit worried when we showed him the car we were going to put it in! But after some shoving and rearranging of seats, and Gavin, we were off. Rosie would have loved the driving position I had to get the driver's seat in to fit the fridge in!
Gaz lay in the back holding the boot down. The woman behind looked a bit surprised when she could see bits of Gavin in the boot. But we got back to his and started to unload. Just as we had it pivoting on the edge of the boot and were lifting it out, some comedian asked us what the time was. Well, we got the fridge out and carried it down the road, then pushed and pulled it up the staircase and did some amusing manouvre at the stop of the stairs and stuffed it in the flat.
After we installed it in the kitchen we went down the road to the Malthouse for dinner (or tea as Gavin called it). It was a huge tea. We both had a huge rectangular York-on-the-shire pudding. In mine were 4 sausages, a pleasingly low quantity of peas and mashed potato. Gavin had roast beef in his. He was telling me about the times he's cooked roast in James Owen Court. He was approached by his foreign neighbours who share the kitchen and wanted to know what on earth he was cooking which took hours. He said it was a roast, and they got very excited, saying how they'd heard of this ancient tradition. They asked him why he was cooking so much, and Gavin informed them that you need to cook loads when you do a roast. No doubt they'll be telling their friends and family back home for years about the guy who spent a whole evening cooking a cow.
We went back to his flat and loaded the Cavalier with all the rubbish from the fridge (which reminds me I still need to unload it). I stopped off at the Imperial on the way home and dumped the newspapers in the recycling bank.
I got back quite late, something like 12.30, but it was a good evening, and it was good to see Gaz's new flat. He's allowed to decorate it, which I thought was good, although it's not bad at the moment. The kitchen is a bit yellow, but then, so is the sun. As well as the kitchen (which has room for a table and a couple of chairs, there's a lounge/bedroom/hall which is quite big and the bathroom, which is quite a nice size. There's a little hallway between the lounge kitchen and bathroom too. I've got photos, and I'll put them on the Photo page later on, for your delight.
